07 Aug Obstacles Into Opportunities
by Keynote Speaker and Coach Darryl Davis
Obstacles in our path may be opportunities to improve our condition. There is an old fable that talks about a king in ancient times who purposely placed a boulder on a roadway. He then hid and watched to see whether anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the obstacles in our path may be opportunities to improve our condition. There is an old fable that talks about a king in ancient times who purposely placed a boulder on a roadway. He then hid and watched to see whether anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the wealthiest merchants and courtiers of the kingdom came by and simply walked around the boulder. Many of them loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. When the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned that every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.
Traditionally, when we have a problem, we think that the best approach is to figure out how to solve it. But what if we approached each problem as an opportunity?
Our markets are changing. What those changes will be time will tell. Some will see those changes as boulders – obstacles too big to overcome. Others will find the way to leverage that change to improve their own market share. To challenge the status quo. And to rise to the top.
That’s what we’re teaching agents to do. Look for the opportunities. Steer clear of the negative. Find new ways to improve their business and life condition.
With the right tools, training, and coaching – anything is possible and the sky’s the limit.
