Build on Your Strengths and Delegate Your Weaknesses

I’m going to be really honest and transparent with everyone and going to share something personal this week.

For many years, I tried to take those things I was weakest at and try to get stronger at them. See, I don’t think I’m a great businessman. I’ve tried really hard, I compared myself to other businessmen, I took courses, I agonized, I beat myself up, and did everything in my power to become a better businessperson.

I finally decided to let go of that and focus on what God (or Higher Power, the Universe, your genetics — whatever you want to call it) gave me. I’m great at prospecting, teaching, coaching, and occasionally making people laugh, and once I let go of what I wasn’t good at, I was happier, and my business did better.

One of the best decisions I have ever made was asking Julie to be my partner and run the business side of things. I was more than happy to hand over that side of things to her because she is so much better at it than I am! So, I have surrounded myself with talented people and we have grown dramatically because I chose to let go of what I was weak at and delegated those things to people who are talented in those areas.

What This Means For You

Stop beating yourself up and agonizing over those things that you aren’t good at and strengthen the things you ARE. Find those things that you DO enjoy, and that you are skilled at, and work on building those up.

Maybe you feel you aren’t having a breakthrough in something like calling FSBO’s, it could be time to shift off of that and focus on something else. Perhaps you can do mailings, or spend some time knocking on doors, or decide to get away from prospecting completely and focus on working with buyers.

If you are keepin’ on keepin’ on something that you aren’t good at, and you’ve spent the time trying and it isn’t working and doesn’t make your heart smile, then it’s time to let it go.

Find that thing in real estate that you ARE good at and run with it!  Build on your strengths and delegate your weaknesses.

Now, don’t misunderstand. I’m not telling you NOT to try. Don’t give up on trying to become stronger at something you are weak at. Don’t NOT try to turn a breakdown into a breakthrough. Don’t NOT try to improve yourself and your business, but if you have given it the time and effort and it still isn’t working and only making you unhappy, then pick a metaphor…know when to fold ‘em…get off the dead horse…as long as you understand that it’s important to be happy in your business and your life and if it isn’t a life worth smiling about, then it’s time to build on your strengths and delegate your weaknesses.
