Developing a “Marathon Mindset” for Your Real Estate Team

“You have to look at your career and personal life at the big-picture level: it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Doing that helps me feel OK during the weeks when one part of my life overwhelms the other.” —Joanna Horsnail, partner at Mayer Brown LLP

The path to real estate success is often compared to a marathon rather than a sprint, particularly when it comes to balancing the demands of your business with the intricacies of your personal life. As Joanna Horsnail aptly notes, adopting a big-picture perspective can be instrumental in weathering the inevitable storms that arise.

In the pursuit of your goals and the goals for your team, it’s easy to become distracted in the relentless pursuit of deadlines, transactions, and market fluctuations. Maybe you even get frustrated when things aren’t going the way you hoped. Maybe it’s hiccup after hiccup and you start to wonder if these are signs you are in the wrong business. However, before you quit or retire, it’s essential to recognize that endurance and resilience are just as crucial as ambition and drive.

These hiccups aren’t proof that your business is failing or the industry is being crushed, it’s just a week where things aren’t going as planned. Nothing lasts forever, and that includes bad weeks! There is always a new day in this marathon business and new opportunities to hit your stride and your goals.

Establishing a “Marathon Mentality” In Your Team

Here are some actionable strategies for you to embrace the marathon mentality and foster sustainable success among your team:

One: Cultivate Endurance: Just as marathon runners train their bodies to endure the rigors of long-distance races, we must train our minds to withstand the challenges of this industry for the long haul. Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, and cultivate a mindset of resilience that allows you to bounce back stronger. Remind your team that every day in their rearview mirror is another step forward in the race.

Two: Make Time for Mindfulness: In the midst of hectic schedules and demanding deadlines, it’s essential to carve out moments of stillness and reflection. Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine, whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to appreciate the present moment. This helps your team stay in their groove and keep a consistent pace in their business.

Three: Foster Work-Life Integration: Rather than striving for a perfect balance between work and personal life, aim for integration. Identify ways to weave elements of your personal passions and interests into your professional pursuits and vice versa. This holistic approach can lead you and your team to greater satisfaction and fulfillment in both realms making it easier for your team to stay the course.

Four: Celebrate Milestones and Practice Gratitude: Winning a marathon isn’t just one big win; it’s all the little wins along the way. It’s celebrating one more block behind you. Whether you successfully negotiate a significant deal, nurture a thoughtful and competitive team, or achieve a personal milestone, take the time to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small.

As you continue to lead your team on this marathon journey, remember that success is not defined by the speed at which we progress but by the resilience, integrity, and impact we embody along the way. By embracing the Marathon Mentality and implementing these strategies, you can navigate the twists and turns of your professional and personal lives with grace, purpose, and perseverance.
