Real Estate Mindset: Stop Editing Yourself Out of Opportunities
Stop editing yourself out of your own opportunities. Learn to catch the pause before you dial, ask, or speak, and act anyway.
The fastest way to strengthen your real estate mindset is to notice how often you edit yourself out of your own life. Editing yourself means taking yourself out, the same way you take a word or a sentence out of an article, so you do not dial, you do not ask, and you do not start. When you stop doing that and get on the playing field of life, good things and even a few miracles start to show up. Here is how to recognize the habit and break it.
On a recent coaching call, something fell into my heart in the middle of a sentence, and I had to stop and teach it. I had invited a newer member to ask me a question, and I could feel the hesitation through the screen. You have a real question, a real situation you need help with, and yet you sit back and observe because you are not sure it is appropriate. In that small pause, you start to edit yourself. Once I said it out loud, I could not stop seeing it everywhere.
What Does It Mean To Edit Yourself?
Julie and I write articles together all the time, and I can tell you exactly what editing is. It is subtraction. You take out a word. Cut a sentence. Delete the paragraph that felt too much. Then this analogy stopped me cold: when you edit yourself, you are taking yourself right out of the moment and off the playing field of life. Below are the places I watch agents do it, each one carrying a real cost.
The For Sale By Owner you never call. You read a FSBO ad and decide the price is too high, or the area is not yours, or it’s not the kind of property you usually work with. You reach that verdict before you ever touch the phone. Those homeowners need help that you could give, yet most will never hear from you, because you close off the possibilities before the dial.
The question you never ask. You are on a training call with a real problem sitting in your head and your heart, and you think to yourself, “This is a dumb question, nobody will care about this, it’s not important enough to ask.” So, you do not raise your hand. The coaching that would have solved your problem never reaches you, and the same thing is waiting next week, only now compounded by time.
The conversation you never start. You are at a party full of people you do not know. You think of something to say and then decide it is a silly way to open, that people will think you are foolish. So, you say nothing. A room full of relationships walks out the door and you never know which one would have changed your year.
The idea you never share. You have a real thought about your office, your market, or the industry, and you edit it down to nothing before you speak, because you question whether you have a valid reason to share it. The idea dies in your head, and everyone who needed to hear it stays exactly where they were.
The advocacy you never attempt. Something in the business genuinely bothers you, and you decide one agent cannot change anything, so you let it go. Nothing moves, and you quietly confirm to yourself that speaking up is pointless.
The introduction you never make. You could connect two people or step forward at an event, and you talk yourself out of it before anyone else has a say. The opportunity never even gets a chance to become real.
Look at the pattern across all six. The edit always comes first, quietly, and then the action stops there. You do not dial, or ask, or begin. When you edit yourself, you are withdrawing from the here and now and the experience that could be and every edit robs you of being fully expressed and playing full out as the person you are.

How Do You Get Back On The Playing Field Of Life?
Start this week by catching the edit in the act. The next time you feel that small pause before you dial, ask, raise your hand, or speak, notice it. That pause is the edit. You do not have to listen to it. Name it, and then do the thing anyway. The point is not to be reckless. The point is to stop taking yourself out of the game before the game even begins. Pick one edit you know you make, whether it is the call you avoid or the question you swallow, and commit to doing that one thing unedited this week. Small reps rebuild the muscle.
From Personal Experience
I can tell you this works because I lived the other way for years. I used to edit myself to be politically correct, to swim with the big boys, to play corporate politics, and never offend anyone. The day I recognized that this was not who I am, I stopped, and I started playing full out. Do I make mistakes now? Yes. Do I sometimes offend someone or get it wrong? Yes. But I am on the field, not withholding who I am, not robbing myself of being fully expressed based on what I believe. That authenticity is a real reason I was recently quoted in a bipartisan Congressional antitrust letter and even asked to help write interview questions for Congress. The edited version of me never gets that call.
The Power of the Unedited Voice
Then let me show you what one unedited agent can do. Kathleen was on that call. For a long time it bothered her that our industry calls us salespeople, when in fact we carry a fiduciary responsibility to our clients, the way doctors, attorneys, and financial planners do. Salespeople do not have fiduciary. She could have edited herself and stayed quiet. Instead she wrote a letter to her state’s consumer protection commissioner explaining why we are not salespeople. She sent it to me, I helped tweak it, and Connecticut is now changing the title from real estate salesperson to real estate agent. One person who refused to edit herself moved an entire industry forward, and she still is not certain her letter was the deciding factor. She sent it anyway.
Do the Inner Work
This is the kind of inner work we do together inside the POWER Program® because a strong real estate mindset is not built on scripts alone. It is built on your willingness to show up fully expressed and stay in the game. If you want to see how leadership on this issue actually moves, look at how organizations like NAR advocate for the profession, then remember that it started somewhere with one person who refused to stay quiet.
Every time you edit yourself, you quietly take yourself off the playing field of life.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean to edit yourself? Editing yourself means taking yourself out of a moment the same way you take a word or a sentence out of an article. You talk yourself out of dialing, asking, or speaking before anyone else even gets a say. The result is that you quietly remove yourself from the playing field of life.
How is self-editing hurting my real estate business? It kills action before it starts. You do not call the for sale by owner, you do not ask the question that would get you coached, and you do not start the conversation that could become a client. None of it shows up on a report, but you feel it in your results and your confidence.
How do I stop editing myself? Catch the pause. The small hesitation before you dial, raise your hand, or speak up is the edit in real time. Name it, then do the thing anyway. You are not trying to be reckless, you are simply refusing to take yourself out of the game before it begins.
What is the payoff for not editing myself? When you stop editing yourself, good things and even miracles can show up. You advocate, you speak, you dial, you raise your hand, and you never know the difference you will make. Kathleen refused to edit herself and helped change a title across an entire state.
Does staying authentic mean I will never make mistakes? No, and that is the point. When you play full out, you will sometimes make mistakes or even offend someone. But you are on the field, fully expressed, instead of withholding who you are. That trade is worth it every time.
