Why Our Words Matter

Powerfact:  The words we choose and the intent with which we use them is more important than ever.

On a recent coaching call, we talked about a time in our country where people were unhappy with the way things were. A group of people got together and talked about creating a new reality for our nation, and after a lot of brainstorming and detail work, they wrote everything down. In 1776, that document became the Declaration of Independence – America’s new reality.

It was the words of a group that created the United States of America. It was words that created our Bill of Rights, and our laws. That’s the power of speech, and the power of the written word that holds us to that reality today.

I firmly believe that, as Power Agents®, we have to pay close attention to our words — what we say to ourselves, to other agents, and to our clients. Our words are at the heart of who we are!

Words are Powerful

As Power Agents® we need to up our game, and part of that is in the quality of our words. Words are powerful. They matter. Words can create a nation, they can inspire people, and they can motivate people. Words can isolate people, hurt people, and cause rifts in relationships. Racism lives in words. So does hope. Our words matter.

We have to pay attention to our speech and what we put into the world. There are some agents that I have dealt with that say they are going to call, or do something, or follow up, and then they don’t. Let me tell you, there is nothing more frustrating than dealing with someone who doesn’t follow through on do what they have promised to do.

Clients EXPECT agents to keep their word. This is what their trust in agents is built on, and if a client can’t trust their agent to do what they say they are going to do, well…they likely won’t be a client for long. There is no better way to build trust with a client or fellow agent than to do exactly what you say you are going to do, and when you say you are going to do it. And when possible – exceed those expectations.

Maybe, in the past, you haven’t been the greatest at following through on what you have said you will do, but this is the time to create a new promise reality! Spend this week paying extra careful attention to what you say, and what promises you make. There is no better time than to rise above the competition and make our Power Agent® words our bond.
