Know Your Worth: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
Knowing your worth transforms everything. Step into your value, own your expertise, and stop negotiating against yourself.
There’s a reason some agents confidently present their commission, stand firm, and get paid what they’re worth—while others give discounts, struggle to justify, or even hesitate to pick up the phone in the first place. It all comes down to one thing: mindset. If you don’t fully believe in the value you bring to the table, how can you ever expect your clients to?
When you doubt your worth, it shows. You hesitate when presenting your fee, soften your stance when challenged, and end up negotiating against yourself. But when you step into your power—when you truly understand that you are not just a salesperson but a skilled strategist, negotiator, and problem-solver—everything changes.

Step One: Identify the Root of Your Doubt
If asking for your full commission makes you uncomfortable, take a moment to ask yourself why. Do you fear rejection? Worry that sellers won’t see your value? Feel unworthy of higher earnings? These doubts don’t come from reality; they come from years of conditioning. Society often tells us to be humble, not to ask for too much, or that sales is about convincing rather than guiding. But real estate is a profession, and just like a doctor or lawyer, you deserve to be paid for your expertise.
Action Step:
Write down every fear or hesitation you have about discussing commissions. Then, challenge each one. Ask yourself: Is this true, or is this just a belief I’ve accepted?
Step Two: Own the Value You Bring
A homeowner hiring an agent isn’t just paying for a sign in the yard. They’re investing in your knowledge, marketing expertise, negotiation skills, and ability to navigate legal and financial complexities. They are paying for a smoother process, a higher sale price, and the peace of mind that comes from having a professional in their corner.
When you truly understand the impact of your work, confidence follows. You are not asking for a commission—you are presenting an investment in success.

Make a list of 10 ways you help sellers net more money and experience a smoother transaction. Keep this list in front of you before every listing appointment.

Step Three: Rewire Your Internal Dialogue
Author Deborah Adele once said, “All self-sabotage, lack of belief in ourselves, low self-esteem, judgments, criticism, and demands for perfection are forms of self-abuse in which we destroy the very essence of our vitality.” Your brain believes what you tell it. If, deep down, don’t believe you are deserving, you won’t be. If you constantly think, Maybe I should lower my fee or I hope they don’t push back on commission, you’re already setting yourself up for struggle. Instead, flip the script:
- “I am a skilled professional who brings tremendous value to my clients.”
- “I don’t lower my commission because I don’t lower my standards.”
- “I confidently explain my worth because I know the results I deliver.”
Confidence doesn’t come from waiting until you “feel ready.” It comes from acting as if you already are.
Action Step:
Getting past self-sabotage means understanding why you do it in the first place. Once you identify that, create self-supporting behaviors to counteract the negative ones. Before every listing appointment, say these affirmations out loud. Your energy shifts when you declare your worth with certainty.

Step Four: Practice the Commission Conversation
Rehearse. Out loud. In the mirror. Roleplay with a colleague. Say the words until they feel natural. The more you practice saying the words to explain your value and handling objections out loud, the less fear you’ll feel in the moment. Confidence comes from preparation.

Role-play commission conversations with another agent or record yourself and listen back. Notice where your voice wavers or where you could strengthen your response. If you discover that you “get stuck” at the same place each time, think about why. Revisit Step 3 if needed.

Step Five: Stop Seeking Approval, Start Leading
The biggest confidence killer? Worrying about what others think. Your job is not to be liked—it’s to be respected and trusted. Sellers will follow your lead if you project certainty and confidence in your own abilities. If you waiver, they’ll know, and question everything.
You don’t need every listing. You need the right listings—ones where the client values your expertise. The agents who get paid their worth don’t chase approval; they attract the right clients by standing firm in their value. You don’t need permission to be paid what you’re worth, you need to know you’re worth every penny.

The next time a seller questions your commission, instead of feeling defensive, lean in with curiosity and ask, What is it about my fee that concerns you? This puts you back in control of the conversation.
