Qualities To Look for When Searching For A Real Estate Coach

There are a number of statistics that predict failure for brand-new agents within their first two years, but we disagree! We know that any agent who chooses to use a real estate coach from the start sees the value (and success!) in this incredible partnership.

Being a real estate agent can be tough, and even lonely. Growing your skills? Being accountable? Brainstorming? None of those work very well when you are flying solo. Finding an awesome real estate coach to help you grow your business is quickly becoming a must, particularly when surrounded by fierce competition.

How A Real Estate Coach Can Help You Grow Your Business

You may be thinking, “Do I really need a coaching program? I’ve been doing alright on my own, and I’m not sure I have the money to spend on something that I probably don’t need.” I could point to statistics left, right, center, and diagonally showing how real estate agents improve and grow their business using a real estate coach, but instead, let’s take a peek at what a coach can do for you:

  • A coach will help you set goals for your business, both short and long-term, that will be realistic and achievable.
  • A coach will know the tools to help you with lead generation, prospecting, and self-promotion.
  • A coach will have the marketing savvy to help you market homes and brand yourself across social media and direct mail.
  • A coach will be able to help you take advantage of your strengths and improve on your weaknesses.
  • A coach will be able to help you avoid making costly mistakes, or help you take the next steps to recoup losses if possible.
  • A coach will be able to assist you with time management struggles and help you to create a more efficient and consistent schedule.
  • A coach will be able to provide you with an objective perspective and offer feedback without the emotional attachment that can blind agents to possibilities and outcomes.
  • A coach will be able to inspire, motivate, and reassure you in taking that scary next step, pushing you out of your comfort zone to face your fears.

What Qualities You Should Look for in a Coach

Just like fingerprints, no two coaches are the same. Each will have their own personal style, teachings, ideas, and tips, so making the effort to do your homework when searching for a coach will be worth the time and energy. Here are some qualities to look for when on the hunt for a coach and mentor:

  1. They have an attitude and business approach that aligns with your own personal attitude and business approach. If that coach teaches heavily on using canned scripts or a step-by-step method that doesn’t line up with what you personally enjoy doing, then that coach may not be the right coach for you. Finding a coach that resonates with who you are is the first thing you need to look for, because if you don’t share the same mindset, you will struggle to set goals, you won’t want to do what they suggest, and you won’t grow in your business.
  2. They have a proven track record of success. What kind of experience and training do they have? What do their online reviews and testimonials have to say? People who have experience with that coach and have participated in their program will give you a good idea of what that coach is like. What are the recurring themes for that coach’s strengths? What are the common complaints? Are real estate agents reaching the goals they set? You will be able to define realistic expectations for your experience based on what others say.
  3. They are knowledgeable about the ebb and flow of the real estate industry and housing markets, as well as the struggles that real estate agents are facing. The Covid pandemic was the perfect example of how everything about the housing industry went bum over teakettle, and real estate agents were scrambling for answers on what to do next. A coach who can quickly adapt, pivot, and guide others through the next steps is a coach you can trust to be prepared for anything! Having a coach that has their thumb on the pulse of the industry will know what problems agents are facing, and will be able to provide instruction on what problems may be looming ahead, so agents are prepared.
  4. They are available for questions and coaching, both one-on-one and in groups. Are you able to ask specific questions regarding the issues you are struggling with? Are there seminars with other agents? Are there live events? Is it all online? If a coach isn’t very accessible or relies heavily on you following a set program without a lot of facetime to answer questions, they may not be the right coach for you.
  5. They are relatable and authentic. One of the biggest complaints we see is that agents don’t want to feel “pushy” or “salesy”. If you are getting a vibe of inauthenticity from a coach, or they don’t feel relatable, it will be challenging for them to understand the struggles you are having in your business, and give advice on the best way to solve the problems. Let’s face it; it’s just hard to learn from someone who you can’t relate to or who doesn’t seem genuinely concerned about what you want to accomplish.
  6. They are knowledgeable about technology and innovations in the real estate industry. Everyone knows the phrase, “There’s an app for that.” Knowing about the best tech, apps, and innovative tools of the trade that help real estate agents become more efficient is a key ingredient in a great coach. One part of their job is to help you continually move forward in your business, and staying up to date on tools that can help agents do that is a must. After all, they want to help you lighten your load so you can do the activities that will make you money.
  7. The cost of coaching fits within your budget. Real estate coaching is an investment in your business, and in your future, but like with any investment, choose wisely! Let’s face it; there are some coaching programs out there that are very costly. Sure, they are famous, but it won’t do your business any good if you go broke trying to improve your skills. The other thing to note is that you don’t always get what you pay for. Paying a lot in coaching fees to see no significant growth in your business or skills is a waste, so looking for a coach who will be able to propel you to greater heights will be worth the cost tenfold.

Coaching is an Investment of Time and Effort

“I maintained my edge by always being a student; you will always have something new to learn.” -Jackie Joyner Kersee

One of the most important things to know about successful real estate coaching is that this investment is a relationship, and like most relationships, they get better over the long term. Sure, you may try coaching for a month and start seeing some successes and get new ideas, but to truly take advantage of a coach’s wisdom and experience to see considerable growth in your business, it takes time.

“I have been a Power Agent with Darryl Davis for MANY years. The weekly conference calls … The website… The tools are all outstanding. I have been a real estate agent for 20 years, but I always learn something new from Darryl and his team. Uplifting. Fun. Engaging. Excellent for brand new agents looking for top guidance.” –  Laura Hoffman, POWER AGENT®

“Because of Darryl’s systems, I now have sellers calling me to list their home. This helped me generate a total of $8 million in production in my second year of real estate!” – Annette Stitham, Reece & Nichols

“Darryl Davis’s Power Agent has been not only extremely useful but inspiring and full of insight! It has only been a couple weeks and it is already helping me build a strong foundation and direction to build my business and prosper. I’ve been licensed for 2.5 years and was completely misguided to start. I joined a new brokerage with awesome direction and guidance but adding Darryl has helped fine tune everything new I’m incorporating. So excited to see my progress the next few months! So grateful for your support Darryl!” – Lisa Chlapowski, Align Right Realty
